What are the vegan milk choices at DeBeen?

We have coconut, almond, soy, plus oat milk, as of last week. They’re all unsweetened, all good. Which you prefer is mostly personal preference. Try them all!

Which non-dairy milk is best?

In the doctor’s opinion, which milk is best partially depends on what you’re adding it to. A robust dark coffee or espresso drink lends itself to whatever you feel like. But a light tea drink probably works better with coconut or almond milk. Smoothies depend on the fruit. Experiment and see what works for you.

Regarding taste, they all taste like what they are, but milder. They’re meant to play a supporting role to your chosen coffee or tea drink or smoothie. But if you adore coconut, then that most likely will be your favorite. Coconut might feel right on a hot day with a cold drink. Oat might feel more cuddly on a chilly day.

If you have a nut allergy, then probably oat milk is the way to go. It has the most fiber, although that depends on the type and size of the drink or smoothie. Oat milk probably has the creamiest mouthfeel.

People choose vegan milk for many reasons from animal-rights and eco (although almonds, related to cherries and plums, are thirsty plants) to taste, calories/carbs/fat, and nutritional profile.

None provide the protein of cow milk, although soy rates highest. But the amount of milk used in most drinks at DeBeen is probably too small to affect protein consumption anyway.

What is more iconic of DeBeen Espresso than our big fountain? Children love visiting the fish. Did you know that we keep fish food behind the counter? Just ask!

If you have a name for the larger pale koi, let us know by DM on Facebook or Instagram, or let Debbie or Jenn know. If we have enough good suggestions with a fun reason for the name, we’ll consider the names and award a winner!
